Plastic Free July

Project Brief

In celebration of Plastic Free July, the Earth Team at Progress launched an initiative to raise awareness about reducing plastic use by compiling practical tips from Progressors on minimizing plastic consumption in daily life. The goal was to create an engaging and informative infographic, highlighting actionable tips for reducing plastic use, which could be widely shared as a downloadable PDF across social media and other platforms.

Challenges

One of the challenges in this project was managing the length and density of the content, which included a 12-page document filled with statistics and approximately 50 quotes from employees. The task was to make this information visually appealing and engaging, encouraging the audience to read through the quotes and minimizing the bounce rate, despite the document's length. Additionally, the project had a tight timeline, requiring completion within three working days, which added pressure to efficiently balance design aesthetics with content clarity.

Mood Board

My design approach was inspired by a striking yet somber visual of a turtle swimming away, entangled in plastic, surrounded by mounds of debris. This image powerfully highlighted the impact of plastic pollution on marine life. I knew I wanted to "take the audience diving" into this reality, emphasizing the ocean as one of the most affected ecosystems by plastic waste. This guided the aesthetic and thematic choices in the infographic design, aiming to create a visceral connection with the audience and motivate action towards reducing plastic use.

Intuitive Design Decisions

The design choices throughout the infographic were guided by a deep understanding of how to effectively communicate the impact of plastic pollution and inspire action, all while being mindful of the tight deadline. Starting with a striking visual of plastic rain, transitioning to engaging stats, practical tips, and actionable steps, and concluding with a positive "From Plastic to Green" message, each element was crafted to enhance audience engagement and drive home the urgency and potential for positive change within the constrained timeframe.
